Michael is the best team leader and field operative in Section and Nikita's love interest. Birkoff is a friend for Michael for as much as Michael can have a friend because he trusts no one but Nikita. Birkoff helps Michael with off the record stuff many times, mostly for getting Nikita out of trouble. Birkoff most likely has respect and admiration for Michael, which is also probably mutual. When Birkoff dies, Michael tries to save him.
