Matthew was born and raised on the Toronto Island, a community of 700 people. He got his first moment into the the spotlight at the age of 5 when he participated in a human chain designed to stop the government from turning the island into a park. Later, in 1992, the community received a 99 year lease on the land. He declared he wanted to be an actor in his first year schoolbook, which changed to a fireman and astronaut in the next years.

Ferguson was seen in The Long Kiss Goodnight with Geena Davis, in what should have been the most integral scene - it was, he says, "the long kiss goodnight." Ferguson kissed the young Geena Davis in Ireland in a scene that did not make it into the final cut (he even learned a Northern Irish accent for the role), leaving viewers wondering to what exactly the title refers.

Matthew continues to perform in professional workshops with the Equity Showcase Theatre, including the recent production of "Measure for Measure".
